WHY “CASA WALSINGHAM”?
In 1061 the Blessed Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to a lady called Richeldis in the little village of Walsingham, England. She asked Richeldis to build a house like the house in which she had lived in Nazareth, so that Walsingham would become England’s Nazareth. Our Lady gave Richeldis a promise: “All who are in any way distressed, or in need, let them seek me there in that little house... To all that seek me there shall be given succour.”
That promise was amply fulfilled, and the little Holy House that Richeldis built became a major centre of pilgrimage during the Middle Ages. Although it was destroyed in 1538 at the orders of King Henry VIII, Mary's command and promise were never completely forgotten, and in the twentieth century devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham flourished again. The Catholics made their Shrine at the little medieval Slipper Chapel, just outside Walsingham, where pilgrims used tor remove their shoes before walking the last mile barefoot. And the Anglicans rebuilt the Holy House as close as possible to the original site.
It was at Walsingham that Let The Children Live! was founded in 1992. The charity was born at the feet of Our Lady of Walsingham, and she is its Principal Patroness. It is no coincidence that the first parish in the U.S. to support Let The Children Live! was that of Our Lady of Walsingham in Houston. So when Funvini was able to buy a base of its own, it was fitting for it to be named Casa Walsingham in her honor.
Many of the people who come to Casa Walsingham experience the same feelings of love, faith, hope, joy and peace that so many pilgrims have found at Our Lady’s Shrine in Walsingham. The little Chapel on the top floor of Casa Walsingham is a Colombian version of the Holy House - a place of prayer, forgiveness, healing and celebration.
Let The Children Live!, while funded by a Catholic organization, helps children on the basis of need rather than creed. Although most Colombians are Catholics, many non-Catholic children are welcomed and aided at Casa Walsingham.
Now it’s easier than ever to join us in our mission to PROTECT and TRANSFORM the lives of vulnerable and needy children in Medellín, Colombia.
