Medellin suffered much violence in the 1990’s and beyond due to extensive drug trafficking and communist uprisings. This violence led to the unintentional suffering of many children who were left without parents or home. They took to the street to make money selling candy and juggling in the streets, doing anything they could to get by. Today, the majority of the violence has subsided, however, there remains constant fear for the children in the barrios to be caught up in street gangs. We have made huge strides to help but the problems still exist. As recently as of April 2019, two boys we were involved in Let the Children live! Outreach efforts were murdered.
Many boys and gifrs in Medellin live in poverty. In recent years their numbers have increaded by an influx of Venezuelan children who have been forced by hunger to seek refuge in Colombia. They all need food, shelter, medical care, clothing, toys, educationa and recreation. It is the mission of Let the Children Live! to provide for as many children as possible to help them overcome the cycle of poverty.
Room to GROW...
The number of children who can be helped at Funvini’s two centers is limited by lack of space. We have drawn up plans to build a library, a multi-purpose class-room, an extra dormitory and bathroom, two offices, two loos and an elevator, and to enlarge the Chapel and the dining-room. But prices have been shooting up in Colombia even faster than in the U.S., so building and equipping these additional facilities is now likely to cost around $150,000. Our income fell by 30% in the first part of 2022 so we urgently need extra help to enable us to start work on this project as soon as possible.
HELP BUILD MORE SPACE FOR MORE CHILDREN
Let the Children Live! has responded to the problem since 1994 by profiding a safe envioronment for our children to learn and be nurtured through our various programs. Our ability to help these children is in direct proportion to the amount of funds we raise.
